Week 1-2

On this blog page you will find the objectives for our academic subjects.  It will be updated at least every month.  Please check out your individual child's teacher page for more information that pertains to that classroom.

We, the first grade teachers, are really looking forward to getting this year underway.  We are very excited to meet some new faces and also get reacquainted with past families.  Please feel free to send us an e-mail or leave us a voice message at school if you have any questions or concerns. Our personal information is at the bottom of our individual blog pages.  We look forward to meeting with each of you.

Week 3
Here’s what our CA first graders are learning these first weeks:

Reading: The first two weeks we are reading books that identify the who, what, where, when, and why in our stories..  Our read-aloud books include several Pete the Cat books, The Night Before First Grade, First Day Jitters, and How to Fill Your Bucket.

PhonicsIn the first several weeks, we are reviewing kindergarten phonics concepts, including letter sounds, short vowels, syllables, and rhyming.

Writing: Students will begin writing their letters to practice their handwriting.  We will stress write from the top and move down.

Math: We are finishing the Interim preview tests In the next several weeks, we are reviewing kindergarten math concepts such as addition strategies, number recognition review with numbers to 31, shapes, patterns, and number bonds.

Core Knowledge: Our first unit in Core Knowledge is Fables.  We are studying fables from different cultural backgrounds: stories from Aesop’s Fables, Anansi, and Brer Rabbit.

Core Virtue: September’s core virtues are Respect—treating others with high regard—and Responsibility—doing your part for others and your community.

PE Shoes
Please note that PE classes will be going outside often for class when weather permits. Students need to wear outdoor tennis shoes when class is held outside.  The shoes designated for indoor use should NOT be used for outdoors so as to preserve the new gym floor. Any older athletic shoes or every day tennis shoes that students wear to school are perfect! (Students cannot wear fashion boots, Mary Jane's, sandals, slip-ons, etc. for PE class).
