Week 10

Week 10

Here’s what our CA first graders are learning in our 10th week:

Reading: This week we focus on the central message and identifying the key details. The books we are reading include The Leaf Blew In, and Henny Penny  As you read with your child at home, stop and ask them what is the key details. What is the central message and key details of the story?  

Phonics Blends are two (or sometimes three) consonants put together at the beginning or end of a word. For example, in the word "truck," tr- is the beginning blend. In the word "fold," -ld would be the ending blend. Students will practice identifying blends in words, in addition to reading and spelling them.This week we are focusing on L blends.  We will find words that begin with r blend combinations.  Ex. trick, treat, and truck.

Writing: First grade will begin the week with teaching how to create a "How to" writing piece. We use first, next, and last to organize our thoughts when giving a step-by-step writing sample.   

Math: Interim testing

IXL: If you would like to use IXL at home, we recommend these sections for practice this week:
  • Counting and Number Patterns (Section A)
  • Addition (Section B & C)
  • Subtraction (Section D & E)
  • Mixed Operations (Section F)

Core Knowledge: We will Begin a new unit on Early World Civilization.  


Core Virtue: Novembers's core virtue Generosity.

Veteran's Day Program
Cologne Academy's Veteran's Day Program will be held on Friday, November 10 at 2:30 pm in the CA Gym.
This is a wonderful program honoring all of our Veterans and we invite all of our CA families to attend.  

We need your photos! 
If you have a special serviceman/woman that you would like to honor in our Veteran's Day program please click here for a photo submission form (or pick up a form up in the main office) to submit with a photograph. The photo will be included in the PowerPoint presentation during the Veteran's Day program. 
   
Please submit photos with a completed photo form to Carla Riemer at criemer@cologneacademy.org at your earliest convenience*
*Photo submission DEADLINE is Monday November 6, 2017.* If you had pictures in the slideshow from last year, we will be able to reuse your photos.

Week 8


On this blog page you will find the objectives for our academic subjects.  It will be updated at least every month.  Please check out your individual child's teacher page for more information that pertains to that classroom.


Conferences: Tuesday and Wednesday (10/17 and 18) Please make sure to double check your conference time slot for your child. If you have not signed up yet please consider doing so. We can't wait to see you at CA!



Week 9
Here’s what our CA first graders are learning in our 9th week:

Reading: This week we focus on character traits and how we find them for a character. The books we are reading include Officer Buckle, and Recess Queen  As you read with your child at home, stop and ask them what is the character feeling? What are their action and what do they say?  All this helps us to find their character traits.

In the word "fold," -ld would be the ending blend. Students will practice identifying blends in words, in addition to reading and spelling them.This week we are focusing on L blends.  We will find words that begin with l blend combinations.  Ex. flap, slip, and plug

Writing: First grade will begin the week with teaching how to create a "How to" writing piece. We use first, next, and last to organize our thoughts when giving a step-by-step writing sample.   

Math: Interim review of subtraction and addition word problems

IXL: If you would like to use IXL at home, we recommend these sections for practice this week:
  • Counting and Number Patterns (Section A)
  • Addition (Section B & C)
  • Subtraction (Section D & E)
  • Mixed Operations (Section F)

Core Knowledge: We will Begin a new unit on Maps.  The primary focus will be on the 4 cardinal directions of North, South, East, and West.


Core Virtue: October's core virtues are honesty and integrity.

PE Shoes
Please note that PE classes will be going outside often for class when weather permits. Students need to wear outdoor tennis shoes when class is held outside.  The shoes designated for indoor use should NOT be used for outdoors so as to preserve the new gym floor. Any older athletic shoes or every day tennis shoes that students wear to school are perfect! (Students cannot wear fashion boots, Mary Jane's, sandals, slip-ons, etc. for PE class).

Policy
Per policy, if your child has a temperature over 100 degrees, vomits, or has diarrhea, you be called to pick him/her up. They will need remain home until they are fever-free without medication and/or have not experienced vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours.

All medication sent to school for students must be in the original labeled container along with a completed and signed medication request form from the parent and their physician.

All Action Plans for asthma, allergies, and seizures must be updated every year at the beginning of the school year.

Need immunizations? Carver County Public Health is offering a Back to School Vaccination Clinics on September 5th and 11th for low cost immunizations for those without insurance coverage for vaccinations.
