Week 9

Here’s what our CA first grader scholars are learning in week 9:

Reading:We are starting an author study revolved around Gail Gibbons.We will be focusing on non fiction characteristics of the stories Pumpkins and Apples, while studying the main topic of the story (apples and/or pumpkins).We will also be finding text evidence within Gail Gibbons stories. Then, we will be comparing and contrasting Pumpkins and Apples at the end of our two week author study unit.

Phonics:We are continuing to learn about blends this week. Blends are two (or sometimes three) consonants put together at the beginning or end of a word. For example, in the word "truck," tr- is the beginning blend. In the word "fold," -ld would be the ending blend. Students will practice identifying blends in words, in addition to reading and spelling them.

Writing:Students are continuing to work on their small moment pieces. This week they will dive into how to edit, revise and publish their pieces. Students will be using a check list to edit their writing pieces and then getting them ready to publish and finalize.

Math:We are continuing to balance equations. Students are recognizing that the equal (=) sign means, "the same as." Students are then to figure out how to make both sides "the same as" the other side. For example, 2+3=__+1 the missing part to make this true would be 4. Here are a few other examples: 10-5=0+__ 6+__=7+4

IXL:If you would like to use IXL at home, we recommend these sections for practice this week:
  • Counting and Number Patterns (Section A)
  • Addition (Section B & C)
  • Subtraction (Section D & E)
  • Mixed Operations (Section F)

Core Knowledge:Matter, Matter, Every Where! Now that students know that matter can be found in three different states, students are going to explore how matter can change states. We will be focusing upon how water can change states by adding or subtracting heat.

Core Virtue:October's core virtues are Honestytelling and saying what is trueand Integritydoing what is right even when no one is looking.

Week 8

Here’s what our CA first graders are learning in week 8:

Reading:This week we are reading stories that revolve around the fall season. Within these stories we will be continuing our conversation of characters. We will also begin to discuss characteristics of fiction and non fiction stories. Stories we will be reading this week will be Nuts to You!, Leaf Man, Why do Leaves Change Color?, Fall, and When the Leaf Blew In.

For example, in the word "truck," tr- is the beginning blend. In the word "fold," -ld would be the ending blend. Students will practice identifying blends in words, in addition to reading and spelling them.

Writing: Students are continuing to work on their small moment pieces. We are studying a mentor text and using the authors craft to apply to our own small moment writing pieces.Our mentor text, The Night of the Veggie Monster, uses ellipses and bold words. Some of these bold words are written in a different font.We will then applying this authors craft to our own small moment writing pieces.

Math:Now that students can find missing parts of an addition and subtraction problem, we are going to move into balancing equations. Students are to recognize that the equal (=) sign means, "the same as." Students then are to figure out how to make both sides of the equal (=) sign "the same as" the other side. Core Knowledge:Matter, Matter, Every Where! This week we began our science unit on matter. We will discuss that matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. We will also learn that matter can be described by color, shape, texture and size. Lastly, we will be learning that matter can come in three forms, liquids, solids and gases.

Week 6

***We are wearing RED on Monday Oct. 12th to join the nation in showing our support to be an Upstander against bullying.  RED is to show we know that bullying does exist in our nation, but it stops with us, we will actively choose to be kind. The PRIDE Star way is to Think, Act and Tell if we experience or see bullying. Uniform bottoms, RED on top.


Here’s what our CA first graders are learning in week 6:

Reading: This week we are learning about circular stories. These stories follow a circular pattern where they begin the same and end the same. Students will be reading The Napping House and One Dog Canoe while completing activities to demonstrate the circular structure of the story.

Phonics: We will begin to learn about blends this week. Blends are two (or sometimes three) consonants put together at the beginning or end of a word. For example, in the word "truck," tr- is the beginning blend. In the word "fold," -ld would be the ending blend. Students will be practicing identifying blends in words, as well as reading and spelling them.

Writing: Students are continuing to work on their small moments pieces. They are bringing their characters to life by making them move, speak and feel. Students will also begin to edit their writing by using punctuation marks and capital letters in their sentences, as well as using a rubric. We will also look at some mentor stories to gain ideas to add into our own stories. In addition to our writers workshop, we also have began practicing our handwriting skills.

Math: After learning about fact families and how addition/subtraction are related, first graders will be finding a missing part of an addition or subtraction problem. For instance, 7 + __ = 10 or ___- 5 = 6. We will also be adding three numbers, such as 2 + 3 + 5 = ____.

Core Knowledge: We are continuing our first science unit of the year, The Human Body. Students have learned about the body's systems including, the muscular system, skeletal system, circulatory system, nervous system and digestive system. This week students will learn about how to keep their bodies healthy by exercising and eating healthy.
