On this blog page you will find the objectives for our academic subjects.  It will be updated at least every month.  Please check out your individual child's teacher page for more information that pertains to that classroom.

We, the first grade teachers, are really looking forward to getting this year underway.  We are very excited to meet some new faces and also get reacquainted with past families.  Please feel free to send us an e-mail or leave us a voice message at school if you have any questions or concerns. Our personal information is at the bottom of our individual blog pages.  We look forward to meeting with each of you.

Here’s what our first graders are learning this week: May 23-27

Interactive Read Aloud: For the remainder of the school year, we will be focusing on stories revolved around family relationships. In these stories, we will also be reviewing skills learned throughout the year in our read aloud stories, such as character traits, motivation and actions. Some titles include, Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman, Sunflower House by Eve Bunting, Aunt Flossie's Hats, by Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard, and Emma's Rug by Allen Say.

Phonics:
-ur
words

We are in our end of the year unit on learning to spell high frequency words, long vowel team or r-controlled words, and “fun” words from the lists you made at home. Each Friday your child will have a spelling test of 6 words they have been practicing all week through various activities.

This week, we will focus on
-ur words.

Writing:This week we will be creating a Diary of a First Grader. Students will be reviewing their entire first grade year and making a diary to order the events or our first grade year chronologically, very similar to a time line. Mrs. Niebuhr's class has been learning to write a friendly letter.  They wrote a thank you to the MN Zoo for our field trip and are currently working on a letter to a friend or family member.

Math:  Math Interim on Tuesday and Wednesday! Get lots of sleep and eat a healthy breakfast!

IXL: If you would like to use IXL at home, we recommend these sections for practice this week:

·           Review of Addition and Subtraction (Sections B-F)

Core Knowledge: We will then be continuing our final Core Knowledge science unit:Electricity! Students will be exploring static electricity, circuits and conductors/insulators through hands on experiences. Students will also be learning about ways to stay safe when using electricity.
