Week 26

Here’s what our first graders are learning this week: February 29th - March 4th

Interactive Read Aloud:  This week students will finish reading multiple folktales and identifying the point of view of which the story is being told. We will also read "fractured" fairy tales.  A fractured tale modifies the plot or the characters of a traditional fairy tale. The folktales we will be reading are: Jack and the Beanstalk, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and Little Red Riding Hood.

Phonics:  This week we are continuing to learn about r-controlled vowels, which are any vowel paired with the letter r- such as -ar, -er, -ir, ur and -or. We also call this phonics skill "bossy r" since the r sound tells the vowel sound what to say. Students will be practicing how to read, write and recognize words that contain r-controlled vowels. We continue reviewing vowel teams.

Grammar:
 Adjectives:  words that describe nouns.

Writing:   We continue studying Laura Numeroff, who is the author of the "If you give a Mouse a Cookie" series. Students will study her stories and writing style, then create their own versions using Laura Numeroff's writing style.

Math:  This week students will be leaning about Time.  Students will be able to write and tell time to the hour and to the half hour.  We will also introduce the quarter hour and three quarter hour concept.

IXL:If you would like to use IXL at home, we recommend these sections for practice this week:

    Data and Graphs (Section M)
    Geometry (Section K)
  Measurement (Section N)
  Time  (Section S)

Core Virtue: Compassion: sympathy, care or concern for the feelings of others.
