Week 14

Week 14

Here’s what our CA first graders are learning in our 14th week:

Reading: This week we focus on the non-fiction fall books.  We are talking about the characteristics of non-fiction texts.    

Phonics Long A  we will be focusing on the -ail, -ain, -ay, -ake, -ale words (tail, chain, tray, cake, scale)

Writing: First grade will begin the week with teaching how to create a "How to" writing piece. We use first, next, and last to organize our thoughts when giving a step-by-step writing sample.   

Math: We are working on greater than, less than and equals to.
( <, >, =) They will compare 2 sets of numbers or objects to determine which set is greater.

IXL: If you would like to use IXL at home, we recommend these sections for practice this week:
  • Counting and Number Patterns (Section A)
  • Addition (Section B & C)
  • Subtraction (Section D, E and H)
  • Mixed Operations (Section F)

Core Knowledge: We will continue the unit on Early World Civilization.  A copy of the study guide will be mailed to you soon.  The end of the unit test will be Dec. 8th. Keep working on the sarcophagus projects.  They are due Dec. 5th.


Core Virtue: Novembers's core virtue Generosity.

Week 12

Week 12

Here’s what our CA first graders are learning in our 12th week:

Reading: This week we focus on the characters feelings and traits. The books we are reading include 5 Little Monkeys Wash the Car, and The Leaf Man.  As you read with your child at home, stop and ask them to describe the character

Phonics Digraphs are two (or sometimes three) consonants put together at the beginning or end of a word. For example, in the word "truck," tr- is the beginning blend. In the word "fold," -ld would be the ending blend. Students will practice identifying blends in words, in addition to reading and spelling them.This week we are focusing on ph, ch, wh, sh, th blends.  We will find words that begin with s blend combinations.  Ex. three, wish, chop.

Math: We are working on place value.  (52 is 5 tens + 2 ones or 50 +2)

  • Subtraction (Section D & E)
  • Mixed Operations (Section F)

Core Knowledge: We will continue the unit on Early World Civilization.

Week 11

Here’s what our CA first graders are learning in our 11th week:

Reading: This week we focus on the central message and identifying the key details. The books we are reading include Bear Says Thanks, and The Gingerbread Boy.  As you read with your child at home, stop and ask them what is the key details. What is the central message and key details of the story?  

Phonics Blends are two (or sometimes three) consonants put together at the beginning or end of a word. For example, in the word "truck," tr- is the beginning blend. In the word "fold," -ld would be the ending blend. Students will practice identifying blends in words, in addition to reading and spelling them.This week we are focusing on L blends.  We will find words that begin with s blend combinations.  Ex. split, slick, and spine.

Writing: First grade will begin the week with teaching how to create a "How to" writing piece. We use first, next, and last to organize our thoughts when giving a step-by-step writing sample.   

Math: We are starting number patterns and patterns.  We will looking at things like 3, 6, 9, 12 and 7, 9, 11, 13.

IXL: If you would like to use IXL at home, we recommend these sections for practice this week:
  • Counting and Number Patterns (Section A)
  • Addition (Section B & C)
  • Subtraction (Section D & E)
  • Mixed Operations (Section F)

Core Knowledge: We will Begin a new unit on Early World Civilization.

Veteran's Program 2:30 pm 

Veteran's Day Program
Cologne Academy's Veteran's Day Program will be held on Friday, November 10 at 2:30 pm in the CA Gym.
This is a wonderful program honoring all of our Veterans and we invite all of our CA families to attend.  

We need your photos! 
If you have a special serviceman/woman that you would like to honor in our Veteran's Day program please click here for a photo submission form (or pick up a form up in the main office) to submit with a photograph. The photo will be included in the PowerPoint presentation during the Veteran's Day program.
