Week 2

On this blog page you will find the objectives for our academic subjects.  It will be updated at least every month.  Please check out your individual child's teacher page for more information that pertains to that classroom.

We, the first grade teachers, are really looking forward to getting this year underway.  We are very excited to meet some new faces and also get reacquainted with past families.  Please feel free to send us an e-mail or leave us a voice message at school if you have any questions or concerns. Our personal information is at the bottom of our individual blog pages.  We look forward to a great year.

Here’s what our CA first graders are learning week 2:

Reading: This second and third week, we are reading books that identify the who, what, where, when, and why in our stories..  Our read-aloud books include The Night Before First Grade, First Day Jitters, and in following weeks Rainbow Fish, Dr. DeSoto, and How to Fill Your Bucket.

PhonicsIn the first few weeks, we are reviewing kindergarten phonics concepts, including initial and ending letter sounds, short vowels, syllables, and rhyming.

Writing: Students will begin writing their letters to practice their handwriting.  We will start with c, o, and a.  We are focusing hard on correct letter formation.

Math: Math: This next week, we are learning about number bonds and addition facts to 12. Students were introduced to number bonds in kindergarten, and we will review part-part-whole concepts together as a class. Number bonds are simply one strategy that students can use to add. We will also use number lines, counting on, partners of 10, and pictures to solve addition problems this week and in the weeks ahead.

IXL: If you would like to use IXL at home, we recommend these sections for practice this week:
  • Counting and Number Patterns (Section A)
  • Addition (Section B)
Core Knowledge: Our first unit in Core Knowledge is Fables.  We are studying fables from different cultural backgrounds: stories from Aesop’s Fables, Anansi, and Brer Rabbit. Fables have a moral to learn.  Ask your child about the story they read each day and what they learned.

Core Virtue: September’s core virtues are Respect—treating others with high regard—and Responsibility—doing your part for others and your community.
